I've used a lot of different shaving creams over the last decade and would consider myself a shaving nerd of the neo "wet shave" revolution. This product is marketing itself to wet shavers, and says it should be applied to the face "preferably with a brush".

The problem is that it is designed to be used without a brush. And it makes sense -a brush is used to make lather. It's impossible to apply something that needs to be lathered without a brush.

This product comes out of the jar already fluffed up. If you try to use a brush you just end up smearing it around the same way you would with your fingers. It gives a fantastic shave, but you have to use an _enormous_ amount of it for each shave. Easily 5x-10x the amount you would use for a regular shaving cream that requires a brush.

So, to recap: the shave is very good, it's impossible/useless to use it with a brush, and the amount you need to use is 5x-10x what you would use with other shaving creams which require a brush (and so it's 10x-20x the price per shave).

Customer review from the Amazon Vine Program I've tried them all. My Italian whiskers have forced me to buy every product in the shaving aisles over the years. Everything. The closest shave I've found was using Clinque's Shaving Creme. It wasn't perfect, but it worked. I was doubtful with this product, but I was quite surprised. This shave creme has now given me the. Best, closest shave in my life. No exaggeration!

The creme is dense; a little dab goes a long way. It is creamy and minty. It feels good on the face. I use a disposable Mach 3 razor, and it is barber-shop close. It seems to protect against nicks as well. I finish off my routine with Noxema face creme for the cooling effect. However, this creme has a cooling effect in itself so I'm not sure I need to continue the Noxema treatment.

The one area of improvement that I would recommend for Baxter's is that I wish it did not come in a tub. Since I shave in the shower, water gets into the container. I think a tube of some kind would work nicely.

Highly recommended!

Customer review from the Amazon Vine Program I've been shaving for A LOT of years and have used an array of creams. Basically, there are two types of creams (we're not talking here about the goop out of a aerosol can that's garbage) --creams that are used "brushless" and those designed to generate a rich lather by using a traditional shaving brush.

The Baxter of California Super Close Shave Formula attempts to bridge the gap and be used both with and without a brush. Thus the split personality.

Applied by hand and massaged into the beard, this cream provides a smooth, gliding surface for your shave. I used a Weber Stainless double-edge safety razor with a SuperMax blade and got an excellent shave with no irritation or pull. Must say this is one of the best "brushless" creams I've encountered in decades of using creams. 5 STARS.

Now that other Personality...

With a super badger Rooney brush however, this cream failed miserably to generate any kind of lather one would expect from a cream/brush combination, such as one would receive from Truffit & Hill, Taylor or Art of Shaving creams. All first rate lather generators. No matter the cream/water ratio I was unable to generate a sufficient coating to ensure a decent shave. Failure. NO STARS.

So, the bottom line: If you DON'T use a brush, throw away that canned goop and get this cream. You won't regret it, and BTW, it is a very generous amount of product which will outlast several cans of the goop.

If you use a brush, pass. There are numerous other, better choices out there.

Customer review from the Amazon Vine Program This "hydrating" shave cream creates a lather which is plenty good for lubricating a wet shave. It hits the face with a nice cooling menthol feel. It is a good, modern shave cream. It just doesn't do it for me. I tried bowl lathering, scuttle lathering, and face lathering. I loaded my Edwin Jagger Pure Badger Travel Brush with lots of product, and the lather is just not thick enough for me. If lubricating lather is more important to you than a thick lather, if you like a mentholated shave cream, give this a try.

Customer review from the Amazon Vine Program First to start, I have VERY sensitive skin. I have tried almost every brand of shave gels and razors. I also have 3 high end electric razors (price range $150 and up). I used to use Bump Shave Gel, but also tried Axe Sensitive and many others. I currently as far as razors am using a 5 blade Gillette Fusion and a straight edge blade.

This product comes in a round tub and is pearly in look and is a cream like Noxzema skin cleaner. Where as other shave products say they have 'menthol cooling' this brand is really strong, almost like toothpaste on your face. That is something that you will either like or not, for me the extreme cooling sensation was pleasant.

Now it is key that you wet your face with warm water well and apply the product. It is really easy to put it on too thick. I made that mistake the first time I used it and the razor could barely get through cream to get to my face. So, you MUST thin it out a little bit. It says apply with a brush, and you can do this. The problem is many people are not familiar with the proper use of a shave brush and will end up putting it on too thick or trying to make a lather with it. I was lucky enough to have my grandfather teach me how to use a shave brush when I was young as that is how he shaved every day until he passed away and taught me that sometimes you use a brush slightly wet to apply a thick cream or wet it heavily to create a lather. Either way, you can apply this product with a brush if you desire but it is not essential for use.

This is a really great item. It allowed my a face very close shave, and left it feeling cool and razor burn free. Like I stated before, I was a huge fan of Bump shave gel, but it has since vanished from store shelves. This product is the closest in quality to Bump that I have tried since. The one negative I would say about this item is a bit pricey, but it does all it says.

Baxter Shave Formula is a really top quality product.
