My situation: I'm 44 and very light-complected with oily combination skin, mild rosacea, and minor sun damage. My cheeks are dry, but my T-zone is still fairly oily. I have fine lines on my forehead and in my eye area that are virtually invisible when I'm not wearing makeup. Most of the dozen or so liquid foundations I've used in the last 5 years or so have settled into those lines and made them appear deeper, aging me by at least 10 years by the end of the day! And if the foundation is more emollient and doesn't accentuate lines, then it pools in my enlarged pores and forms polka dots across my nose! I'm also finding that, as I age, less makeup is more. I can't wear dark lipstick anymore, or heavy eye shadow, without looking like an over-the-hill Lady Gaga wannabe. And I can't wear a high-coverage foundation without getting the mask effect. I realized I had two alternatives: I could look (a) old and perfect, or (b) youthful and imperfect. I chose (b). I had tried BareMinerals a few years back and found it wholly inadequate, so I looked at some of the newer (and less expensive) powder foundations. Enter Neutrogena Mineral Sheers ("NMS").
PROS: Used with a good kabuki brush, foundation brush, and concealer brush, NMS gives coverage that is about equivalent to a moderate coverage liquid, and it does it without settling into fine lines. It never looks masklike. Coverage is built up gradually so that it looks completely natural. There is no blending required and no line of demarcation at the jawline. It's also healthier for the skin. My rosacea mostly behaves and I get far fewer blemishes than when I used liquid makeup. What little redness I do get is easily covered with NMS and my concealer brush.
CONS: NMS leaves enlarged pores mostly exposed, and using a silicone primer underneath it made no difference for me. NMS doesn't have quite the staying power of a good liquid foundation. Perspiration, oil, sneezing, and weather can take their toll after 8-12 hours. NMS provides a sponge applicator in the package, but it's a waste because it's not the right tool to use with the product. They should skip the sponge and just put more product in the package. Shades might not be the same between the pressed and loose powder NMS lines. I found the loose version of my shade (Classic Ivory) to be at least a full shade darker than the pressed.
After several years of wearing liquid foundation, it takes some practice to get a powder foundation right. The main factors are technique, tools, and what you put underneath the powder. You have to practice a bit to get a feel for how the the brushes work and how the powder goes onto your skin. (I suspect everyone is a bit different.) The brushes you use make a difference; the drugstore specials won't cut it (I tried 'em). Ecotools makes excellent brushes that won't drain your bank account (like this one: Ecotools Recycled Retractable Kabuki). If your skin is oily, you won't need much under the powder; if you're drier, you'll need to give the powder something extra to stick to. Because I have dry patches and I'm concerned about sun protection, I give NMS a good "foundation" to adhere to: First, a BHA gel, then a light moisturizer, then a non-greasy SPF 45 lotion, and, finally, a tinted sunscreen. I give all this a minute or two to set before applying NMS with my Ecotools brushes. You can't build coverage endlessly, because at a certain point the outer layers of powder are no longer making contact with your skin. These outer layers will not adhere very well, and to the extent they do adhere, they'll give the skin a dry, dusty appearance.

This is the best foundation I have ever used. I am an oriental and 71 yrs old, naturally I have many wrinkles. This one does not get into creases and caked. I have yellowish skin colour so I use Natural beige and Honey Beige to blend the colour I want.Best Deals on Neutrogena Mineral Sheers Powder Foundation, 0.34 Ounce

I have used several mineral brands in the past, including Bare Minerals, Mary Kay, and others. I picked this one up because I have very fair skin (hence the Classic Ivory) and liked that there was spf 20 in it, while Bare Minerals has only spf 15, and Mary Kay and most others have no spf.I do not recommend using the included sponge applicator, unless you take the compact with you and need a quick touch up. I would use a professional kabuki-style brush for the application, and use the swirl-buff method. Just get a little powder on the brush and buff it out all over your face. I found that it gave me great coverage and matched my skin-tone well. I also would recommend that you exfoliate and moisturize before putting on this product, but that would go for any type of mineral powder foundation.
Overall, I really like it, and would recommend it to anyone. It's really a great product for the price.

The title says it all. This is a problem I run into fairly often. Almost everything is a LITTLE too dark for me.. but this is multiple shades too dark for me. I look orange, like a diluted self-tanner went bad all over my face. The only way I can use this is lightly placed around the outer perimeters of my face, almost like a light contour. Now, I'm pretty pale but I know there are people still (SOMEHOW) paler than I. My advice to my fellow snow-skinned friends is to try elsewhere. Revlon is the closest drugstore match my pigmentless skin has found yet.I still gave this three stars though, because the product itself was a decent texture and if you have light-medium skin or darker, then you might find a use for this powder. But overall the product itself, color aside, wasn't anything too impressive. Hence, 3 stars.
